Obviously compressing after a tube amp will sound a lot different due to the gain staging (more noticeable clipping on transients this way may sound less smooth overall.

I think its more a question of, do you want to compress before or after your amp? Having stuck hardware comps between guitar and amp in the past, I definitely yielded better results with the pedals in this situation - considering noise floor, impedance, level matching etc.
1176 COMPRESSOR PLUGIN UA PRO
One thing I would add I have heard several 'real' 1176 users say they liked the stock 1176 pro tools plugin and when I A/B'd that with my Origin Effects versions, the pedals came out on top for me.įWIW I also participated in a hardware vs software compressor blind test for a research project a couple of years ago and was only right 50% of the time as were the other participants on average. But nobody should take any of that as a knock against the pedals.Ĭlick to expand.I agree with most of what Benny has said, having owned a Cali76-TX, CD and sliderig compact and used a WA76 (warm audio clone) in studio a lot. In fairness, I've since sold all three pedals - I just happen to prefer an optical compressor as a pedal in my rig, and took the opportunity to turn three in-demand pedals into a cool guitar. Depending on the revision of the unit, the FET is either used to shunt some of the input. From there, the signal is routed to the top of a FET, which is being used as a variable voltage resistor. I felt like the big-box Slide Rig was a little more limited in the sense that it wasn't really like 2 full-featured 1176's in one box, but made up for it by making it super easy to get that Lowell George kind of attack and response that I dig. The signal goes through the input stage, via the line input transformer, which has a big impact on the sound. I thought the differences between the Standard and actual 1176 were more detectable at really low frequencies (low notes on the 5th string of a bass), but nothing that bothered me with an electric guitar or acoustic instruments. I suspect that more clear differences would have come into play at more aggressive settings. the buttons, for example), both versions were very, very close at the mild compression settings I tend to use with my UA 1176. Putting aside the obvious functional differences (variable ratio knob vs.

I had a large box Cali76-TX and large box Cali76 standard (and a big box Slide Rig).
